“This year I will surely stick to my plans and not make any excuses”
“I hope this year won’t disappoint me”
“My horoscope/astrology for this year doesn’t look too good”
1. Overestimation and Underestimation of Self-improvement
Failing our New Year’s Resolution within a couple of months is pretty common and usually, halfway through the year, we decide to push it off to the next year.
Some of us may endure a few months of diligent work. Until we don’t see much of an improvement as we expected and eventually get disappointed thus giving up.
People generally “tend to overestimate what can happen in the short term and underestimate what can happen in the long term“
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habits is what keeps you going.”
~Jim Rohn
Having a simple to achieve target for each day, will make it easier to maintain. Sure there might be days you fall back because you don’t feel like doing it but the key thing is not to beat yourself up and get back on track as soon as possible.
2. False sense of Self-development
“The goal of self-development is to be the better and upgraded version of yourself. Broadly, self-improvement is a solo act that involves some intense tasks such as finding the weaknesses, figuring out the purpose of life, etc. “
“How long will you put off what you are capable of doing just to continue what you are comfortable doing?”
~James Clear
One of the main things is how we may be holding ourselves back without realizing it and feeling unsatisfied in our daily lives can be caused by our own mindset.
- Personal traits, you might think you’re not good-looking enough to date or even start talking to someone who is attractive.
Or do you think you are not smart enough to learn what others find easy and think you are dumb to learn hard topics? - Emotions, when you feel like you can’t interact with new people and they won’t like you because you are a depressing person?
Feeling too embarrassed to face the outcome of an event? - Time, do you feel like you never have time or can’t find the right timing to do something you know you need to do in order to improve?
Am sure if you really want it you’ll find the time for it, just as how when someone really likes you, they’ll find a way to spend time with you.
3. No Self Awareness
Self-awareness is your ability to perceive and understand the things that make you who you are as an individual, including your personality, actions, values, beliefs, emotions, and thoughts. Essentially, it is a psychological state in which the self becomes the focus of attention. (verywellmind)
- Try thinking about why you adopted these thoughts and ask yourself if it is really true.
- Are those beliefs actually helping you? Just because it happened a few times doesn’t mean it is true.
Our mind tends to protect ourselves by avoiding struggles and facing failure. - Choose beliefs that can serve you and help shape the future you want to have. Put in the work and know that there will be obstacles and trials whenever you try to change yourself, just know that great things come outside of your comfort zone
Conclusion
Self-improvement isn’t supposed to be easy but at the same time, we overcomplicate it.
Just having these three ideas in mind and not complicating them with all these hacks or tips and tricks, will help you build a strong foundation, and only then we can start incorporating some ideas to further boost our results with more efficiency.
I know the pain of slowly improving and seeing the results only to encounter something that causes us to fall back to the same old self we were not satisfied with or even worse.
Let me know what idea or habit is really helping you achieve the goals that you have set out for yourself in the comments as I am curious to hear them!
